Surfaces in the public arena are a breeding ground for germs. Hundreds or maybe thousands of people touch doorknobs, number pad buttons and counter tops every day, and you don’t know where their hands have been or how clean they keep them.

Whether you are braving the grocery store during a pandemic or simply trying to make it through cold and flu season unscathed, there are several measures you can take to protect yourself.

Keep Your Hands Clean

The most obvious solution is to keep your hands clean, but this is easier said than done. After all, any time you leave the house, it’s difficult to go about your day without touching any surface.

One way to maintain germ-free hands is by using another item to touch frequently handled objects. Use the end of your long-sleeved shirt to grab door handles, or push the door open with your shoulder instead of your palm.

If you do have to touch something with your bare hand, wash your hands thoroughly or use hand sanitizer as soon as possible.

Don’t Touch Your Face

Another way to keep yourself healthy is to be mindful of anything that touches your face. This includes your hands. Even if you have been washing your hands frequently, you never know what kind of microscopic organisms are lingering under your fingernails.

You can still get sick if you rub your eyes or touch your mouth if there are germs on your hands. Make a conscious effort to keep your hands away from your face as much as possible.

Stay Home When Sick

It’s not just important that you protect yourself. Public health is everyone’s responsibility. If you are sick, even if you don’t think you are contagious, stay home to be on the safe side.

What you may believe is just allergies could turn out to be something contagious. Then you run the risk of infecting everyone you come into contact with. You undoubtedly want others to steer clear of you when they have a cold or something worse.

Extend them the same courtesy by staying home and not returning to work until your doctor clears you to do so or you’ve at least been without fever for at least 24 hours.

Taking care of your health is not always easy, especially when everyone around you seems to be ill. By taking the right precautions, you can lower your risk of getting sick.
