The process of moving includes so many tasks that organizing these tasks need a lot of energy and planning. These tasks are all-the-more tough when done altogether.

So instead of trying to achieve the impossible, make a timeline and step by step work on each task. If planned properly and well in advance, moving can be smooth without hampering your routine life, family, and self-care.

Moving Checklist

According to the reputed moving companies associated with moving feedback, a realistic move needs at least 2 months of planning and organizing and the following is a realistic timeline to plan your move efficiently.

The beginning of every process is always the most difficult part. Packing is no exception and probably this is the reason that many people delay their packing till late. So, as advised, start working at least 8 weeks before your actual move.

Week 1

Create a week by week moving timeline checklist. Write all the tasks in detail including time and way of doing. Collect all the required information and contact numbers of all the services required.

Start searching for a reliable moving company. Ask friends and family for references and don’t forget to check the reviews and ratings of the company.

Sort all your belongings and take out all the unnecessary and unwanted things. Either donate them or sell them. In case you are planning to sell them, then make an entry in your moving timeline for the garage sale.

Week 2

Plan a garage sale as soon as you get free from your sorting session. This will declutter your house for the next step and you will also make some money out of it which you can use to buy your packing supplies.

Arrange all the packing supplies required which include cardboard boxes, tapes, packing paper, bubble wrap, and markers. You can get free boxes from your nearby supermarkets or liquor shops.

Week 3

Make sure you inform the school staff about your move if you have kids. Ask them to give you copies of their school records and apply for their school transfer documents.

Start searching for schools in your new locality and confirm the enrolment process there.

Get copies of your family’s medical records from your local doctor.

Week 4

Booking a moving company well in advance will help you in so many ways. It will save time energy and money. So, search for a reliable moving company at least 6 weeks before your move.

Approaching a moving company exactly at the time of your move may cost you extra especially if you are moving in peak times. You may even not get the company of your choice as they may not be available.

Week 5

Now that you have only four weeks left in your current house, make sure you inform your landlord. Ask him for your security deposit.

If you are planning to move to a rental house then make sure that you have chosen the house well in advance and all the paperwork is also done.

Start all the processes related to closing to your utilities at your current place and starting utilities at your new house.

Start packing all the non-essential stuff four weeks before your move. This will save a lot of time in the end and you will be able to pack properly.

Week 6

Change your address at your banks and credit cards to your new address.

Get the insurance policy changed to your new house if your current house is covered.

Make all the necessary arrangements to take your pets and plants to your new house.

Use up all the frozen food items stored in the fridge and open food in your pantry and plan your food items accordingly that there is nothing left in your fridge on a moving day.

Get your car serviced. This task is all the more important if you are making a long-distance move.

Week 7

Start packing most of your stuff now. Box up everything but don’t forget to put labels. Pack smartly and room-wise. Labelling helps in a smooth transition at your destination.

Sort stuff during packing. Keep a different bag for all your valuables including jewellery, heirlooms, etc.? And keep this bag with you all the time. Along with your valuables, keep your important documents too with you in your car and don’t pack them with the rest of your belongings.

Visit your new house and see if it needs any kind of repairs or cleaning, if it does, then get it done without any delay.

Week 8 (Last Week in Your Current House)

Call and confirm with your s=moving service about the day and time of the move.

Pack one bag for this week in which you can keep your essentials that you may need in the initial few days after the move. Keep this essentials bag with you and do not load it in the moving truck.

Keep all the important documents related to the move, handy.

Defrost your refrigerator and clean it thoroughly.

Moving Day

Sit back and let the movers do their work. Once the boxes are loaded in the truck, check all the cupboards and pantry for anything left to take. Dispose of any items that you cannot take along like cleaning materials and paints.
